CCA scholarships awarded

The Calgary Construction Association has chosen its first two recipients of scholarships from its new Education Fund.

CCA Board of Trustees chairman Greg Davidson of Davidson Enman Lumber announced the two winners of the $2,000 scholarships in late January.

The first was Candace Holt, who completed the pre-employment carpentry course at SAIT in the spring of 2000. Candace, whose father has been working in the construction industry since the mid-1960's, recognizes the challenge she faces in the world of construction. Her goal is to be a journeyman carpenter by the year 2006. Her employer, Bruce Brunette, operations manager for Devitt and Forand Contractors Inc., supports and encourages Candace in achieving and obtaining her Journeyman's certificate.

The second individual to receive the CCA's $2,000 scholarship is Dustin Bespalko. Dustin is a university student who worked during the summer months of last year at Graham Construction and Engineering Ltd.

Dustin says he found his first job in the construction industry very interesting and well paying, when compared with his previous summer of employment working at a golf course. He was very pleased to accept the CCA scholarship, and noted that his summer employment on the $25 million Glenmore Water Treatment Plant was an experience that will assist him in his studies. Dustin has returned to the University of Calgary to enter year two of his studies to become a professional engineer and proceed into construction management.
