Finding Your Focus – Pomodoro Timer

If you’re like me (Avree Bujaczek), some days you can’t seem to keep distractions out of the way. I have come across an awesome tool for you!

After going through some Time Management training I was left with an overwhelming bundle of resources – all of which I did some research on. The one that has stuck with me is the Pomodoro Timer.

The concept is simple – set a timer for 25 minutes during which you will focus strictly on one task. No cell phones, no emails (unless your task is “go through emails”), etc. If any other “to-dos” pop into your head, simply write them down and continue on your task at hand. When the timer goes, you’re done! You’ve made it through “1-Pomodoro”. You have earned a 5-minute break. Take a stretch, rest your eyes (I like to look far away outside so they get a break from the screen) and get ready for your next round. After 4 Pomodoros, you get a 15 or 20-minute break (whatever you need before you can get settled again). This is your washroom/phone call time.

Some days are tough – we certainly are not always on the ball. You will be surprised at how fast 25 minutes goes by, and also, how productive you can be when your mind is focused 100% on one task at a time.

I typically just set my phone timer for 25 minutes (with a duck quack alarm to keep me happy), but there are some great apps out there to help you track your time and monitor your productivity.

Good luck! It’s time for my 5-minute break.
