3rd Annual OAEC Workshop

The third annual Owners, Architects, Engineers and Contractors (OAEC) Workshop will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2015.

This workshop is structured to bring all industry partners together in a collaborative environment to interactively discuss practical everyday topics of common interest. Often each party does not understand the world that the other lives in, why things are done in a certain manner and the impact of those decisions on others. Open dialogue encourages the industry to collectively find best practices for common issues.

The unique aspect of this workshop is the "How To" roundtable sessions held in the morning and the afternoon. Each of these sessions is designed to engage 8-10 people through a discussion paper on the topic and find solutions with each of the partners providing input. These roundtable sessions are collaborative and interactive; not the typical speaker presentations.

Topics:
  • How to Make a Project Successful - from conception to occupancy
  • How to Embrace BIM - a valuable tool from design to facility management
  • How to Utilize Electronic Technology - embracing its use in procurement and on the construction site
  • How to be Good Leaders - removing roadblocks through collaboration and trust
This is the largest INDUSTRY event that is hosted jointly by ALL industry partners - owners, architects, engineers and contractors. The list of industry participants is impressive! Not only do you gain perspectives from each other, but you also put faces to names. Don't miss out....click on

Dual Credit Carpentry Program

The Dual Credit Carpentry Program has officially launched as 16 of the Calgary Board of Education’s high school students entered SAIT construction labs last week. This program, which is a partnership between the CCA, Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School District, and SAIT Polytechnic, will have students from grades 10-12 receive 240 hours of hands-on learning, and 135 hours of classroom instruction from SAIT instructors. Upon graduation, these students will receive their high school diploma, in addition to a Pre-Employment Carpentry Certificate from SAIT.

To help launch this program, the CCA has donated a tool crib, tools, and PPE to both school boards, valued at a total of $56,400. The Catholic School District’s 16 students will begin the program in September.

CCA Members Take a Swing at Cancer

The CCA's 21st annual Steacy Easton Memorial Cancer Classic Golf Tournament held in June 2014 raised $7,200 to be used for cancer research.

On behalf of the Calgary Construction Association members, CCA Chair Fabrizio Carinelli presented a $7,200 cheque to the Canadian Cancer Society team.

Thank you to all the CCA members who supported the golf tournament and raised funds to fight cancer.

Being Highly Effective with Everyday Construction Disputes - March 19

The cost of the everyday disputes that arise on and off the jobsite is staggering both financially and emotionally. These disputes rob people and companies of time and money and in many cases entangle many into a legal nightmare where everyone loses. We have a system that is built for “arguing” issues, usually legally, and weak on “preventing” issues. And, these everyday disputes will crop up day after day around conformance and defects, deviations from plans and specifications, extra and out of scope work, delays, RFP’s and Requests For Information, or just plain old personality clashes.
