Managing in an Uncertain Economy

The CCA, in partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada, hosted a free info session with RBC's Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist, Craig Wright on September 23.

Held at the Ramada Plaza Calgary Airport Hotel, 130 people came to hear Wright give insight into the current market. A skilled speaker, armed with equal amounts of wit and expertise, Wright was able to highlight the key drivers of economic activity in Canada, and the global factors that effect these economic forecasts.

The talk was followed by a Q&A session with Wright, who was able to field questions about the increase in non-residential construction investment, and the impact rising gas and fuel prices have on spending, among others.

Attendees left the session more knowledgeable about the economic situation in the most recent quarter of 2015, and what we might witness in the near future.

Women in Construction
Scholarship Recipients

The CCA's Women in Construction (WIC) Committee has chosen the recipients of the two newly-created $1,000 WIC scholarships.

This year WIC has created a scholarship to help women in the industry further their professional development by helping to remove the financial barriers. One scholarship is awarded to an individual who is pursuing an apprenticeship in the trades, while the other is to be offered to a student in Construction Management, Engineering, or a construction related technology program.

Scholarship winner Emma Schmidtz of Graham Construction (above), is working on a Business Administration Diploma from SAIT, to be more effective in her role at Graham.

Whitney Owen of Executive Millwork (below) won the scholarship to aid in her trades training at SAIT so she can continue on her path to becoming a Journeyman Cabinetmaker.

There were certainly some impressive applications for the inaugural scholarship, and we hope to see many more in the coming years.

How Lean Construction (Like the Military) Empowers the Front Line for Better Teamwork

A command-and-control hierarchy used to be the only way to get things done before the 21st century. Your superior gave you a command, and you said “Yes, sir”—or paid the price. But what if the command didn’t make sense in practice? What if it was outdated or inappropriate? You still had to obey. Read more
