Women in Construction Luncheon

The CCA’s Women In Construction Committee hosted its fourth annual WIC Luncheon this year. The event was held at the Coast Plaza Hotel on Thursday, October 22, 2015, and featured guest speaker Jacqui McFarland. McFarland is a Senior Interior Designer with Sizeland Evans Interior Design, a former Instructor, and Department Chair of the Interior Design program at Mount Royal University. Jacqui shared a new highlight of her career as she recently participated in an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model to create a beautiful residence in the seemingly impossible timespan of 30 weeks.

McFarland explained at the core of an integrated project are collaborative, integrated, and productive teams composed of key project participants.” Her presentation was highly informative of how IPD can work to ensure a project runs smoothly, and infused with humour leaving the crowd wanting more.

The event welcomed 160 guests from all sectors of the construction industry. Stephanie Roll, Chair of the Calgary Construction Association, and Joanne Foster, WIC Committee Chair, welcomed the group and gave an overview of WIC’s achievements in 2015.

WIC’s main initiatives are education, mentorship and networking. WIC will continuously thrive to increase awareness of women working in construction, to promote women working in construction, and to provide support for women already in the industry.

Building a Cohesive Leadership Team - November 10

“Organizational health will one day surpass all other disciplines in business as the greatest opportunity for improvement and competitive advantage.” This is the promise of The Advantage; Patrick Lencioni’s bold manifesto about the most unexploited opportunity in modern business. Patrick makes the case that there is no better way to achieve profound improvement in an organization than by attacking the root causes of dysfunction, politics, and confusion. Healthy organizations can execute, love accountability, and are passionate about future success.

Why it is Important to Transition your Company and Ensure its Legacy - November 10

75% of all Canadian businesses are expected to change hands in the next 10 years. Traditionally, only 30% of private enterprises successfully implement that transition. It is critical to our economy and our communities that more companies are able to thrive following a change of ownership or leadership.

CCA to Discuss Prompt Payment/Cash Flow Issues with Federal Government
The CCA board of directors passed the following motion:

“THAT, CCA work with its partner associations, interested stakeholders, and federal contracting authorities, to educate the federal government on the importance of prompt payment and cash flow on federal construction projects, and work together to resolve any concerns, which may include the enactment of federal prompt payment legislation acceptable to the industry.”

This motion was partly in response to a request by the National Trade Contractors’ Coalition (NTCCC) to support its initiative to seek the enactment of federal prompt payment legislation. The motion is also in response to the outcomes generated through consensus at the CCA Industry Summit held September 29 in Toronto.
