CCA Engages with Calgary Economic Development on the New Reality 
Calgarians Face
 
On Wednesday, February 3 a few hundred Calgarians gathered at the Public Library’s John Dutton Theatre in downtown Calgary to see how to re-engage and to re-set expectations, as thousands of Calgary citizens have been laid off as a result of falling oil prices.

Mary Moran, President and CEO of Calgary Economic Development gave an opening address on the state of the economy in Calgary, which set the stage for the panel of business leaders to address the current issues facing the unemployed.

CCA President Dave Smith joined two others from the business community to discuss how to effectively demonstrate ones abilities and skills while looking for work. Smith noted that Calgary has experienced many downturns since the 70s and it is, unfortunately, a part of life... Read more

This year the Calgary Construction Association (CCA) is awarding six $2,000 scholarships to CCA member employees, part-time employees, or dependents. All applications must be pursuing advanced education in a business or construction related field to be eligible.

Take 30 minutes to complete the application and it might be the biggest return on your investment of time you'll make this year.


Deadline to Apply: TOMORROW - February 19, 2016.

Successful applicants will be awarded the scholarships at the CCA's Annual General Meeting, which will take place on March 22, 2016

The Role of Legal Counsel

This session will focus on how to hire a lawyer and what you should expect to pay for. We will review a retainer agreement and explain how the billing and retainer works. We will discuss fixed price legal services, contingency agreements and the consequences of being unclear when instructing your lawyer. We will review the regulatory environment of your legal counsel with emphasis on his/her obligations to the client.

Deciding on the Venue for the Resolution of Disputes
March 1, 11:45 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.

Once you have reviewed your dispute and listened carefully to your lawyer, you will probably be presented with a choice of how you want to resolve the problem. There are a number of different alternatives and questions. In this session we will review them all and, briefly, explain the pros and cons of each course of action.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi says Ottawa will cover a greater share of infrastructure projects than the conventional three-way split with provinces and cities – a formula he said is unfair to municipal governments that have a limited ability to raise taxes. Read more
