OAEC IV Recap

The fourth annual Owners, Architects, Engineers, and Contractors (OAEC) Workshop was held on February 24 at the BMO Centre on Stampede Park. The workshop brought 170 people from the four groups of construction professionals together to discuss four "How To" topics in small groups and in a collaborative environment.

The four topics were "How to Build a Team with Different Mindsets and Hats," "How to Determine the Right Project Delivery Method for your Project," "How to Attract Youth as Successors," and "How to Be Ethical in the Construction Industry."

Efforts were made to ensure the groups had representation from each part of the OAEC community, to enable meaningful and diverse conversations.

The day also included two speakers. The Open General Session was presented by Art Winslow of Graham Construction and Engineering LP. His presentation “Lean Up Your Life” was about applying lean construction principles to our everyday lives and on the job site by recognizing and reducing inherent wastes. By adopting a lean lifestyle, Art has been able to save time and money by eliminating waste in his everyday activities.

Luncheon Speaker Matt Luik from MMM Group Limited spoke about “The Importance of Personality in Driving Team Success.” He stated team success results from strong leaders assembling the right team, understanding individual motivators and strengths, and managing a cohesive team. He touched on personality theory and provided takeaways to improve the success of a team such as “focus on their strengths, not on their weaknesses.”

The results of the four "How To" topics will be compiled and turned into “Best Practices.” Stay tuned for the results of OAEC IV!

Public-private Partnership Can Be an Effective Model for Renewing Critical Water Infrastructure Despite Challenges

There is widespread consensus that Canada’s water systems are in urgent need of investment, replacement, and renewal. For many cities and communities, however, the upfront costs are prohibitive. Public-private partnerships (P3s) are gaining ground as a means for governments to achieve their infrastructure renewal goals; yet when it comes to water, there is still limited adoption of this asset procurement model. Despite perceptual and structural challenges inherent to the sector, P3s can be a viable and desirable model for water and wastewater projects. Read more
