Alberta Construction Association News

On July 14, ACA Chair Paul Verhesen, and Executive Director Ken Gibson met with Labour Minister Christina Gray at the Legislature. At the meeting ACA complimented the government regarding their work previously on Prompt Pay. Also, they discussed the work that had been done on Silica.

ACA expressed our concerns about the WCB review process and how we hoped that the government understood we want to be productive partners. The minister was eager to hear our concerns and expressed her desire to make sure the review was fair and balanced.

Another discussion point was the Canada Jobs Grant Program. ACA felt that the programs we had suggested to the government as a pilot program where ACA would administer it for our members was a good program which offered a great deal for small businesses which make up a large number of our members. We shared our disappointment at the reaction we received from the administration.

In all it was a productive and useful meeting and we hope to continue the discussions going forward with the Minister.

Thank you, Minister Gray.

Labour Market Information Survey
BuildForce Canada has been providing labour market information (LMI) forecasting for the construction and maintenance industry for more than a decade. BuildForce periodically reviews its LMI program to keep in touch with their stakeholders’ views and to demonstrate results to the industry and government funders. The survey gathers data on how the LMI is being used; the impact this information has on organizations and the industry; and if there are areas to improve on. Complete survey by August 18.

New Bulletin: “Is It Over Yet? A Summary of Provincial Limitation Periods”
During the CDBI Design Build Tutorials across Canada, we are frequently asked about the limitation periods for legal actions in the various Provinces. Unfortunately, there is no one common rule across Canada. Many of the provinces have undertaken a review of their limitation legislation and changes are happening, albeit slowly. As a general trend, provinces are enacting a 2-year limitation period in respect of a known cause of action, along with a 10 or 15-year ultimate limitation period. Read more
