Relaunch of Updated Cold Weather Course

The Cold Weather course has been under review since June 2015. The Committee members have worked hard to make the course more relevant since it was last updated in 1994: Barry Young (Burnco, retired), Ron Patterson (PCL), Mike Michalezki (Ledcor), Wellington Evans (Universal Ventilation), Paul Barkauskas (Elan), Jason Wedholm (Clark Builders),  Keith Beggs (New West Equipment), Brad Storey (Brad Storey), Fabian Booth (Superior Propane) and Brian Brandsgard (Superior Propane).
The course was relaunched in Calgary on September 21st and on Oct 4 & 5 it was delivered in Saskatoon and Regina. The picture to the left shows students engaging in the collaborative “pull planning” process as they discuss the implications of cold weather for their sample project.

As Karl Loew, Superintendent for PCL summarized: As always, making time in the early stages prior to construction to plan on all the requirements for temporary heat is critical. This may also include the option of using the new heating system with the approval of Owners and Consultants. Highlighting the Winter Months on your schedule will also help one plan for what kind of heat and labour requirements will be required. I was not aware how long new gas lines in an unserviced area would take to be installed i.e. 14 weeks. As always, covering ground or piles of dirt before cold weather arrives buys you time and saves costs . Proper backfill of excavations using proper fill that is being heat soil or possible 40mm rock and inspections by the Geotec are critical. In my 30 years I have seen many issues that relate to cold weather construction and it was enjoyable to talk and laugh with others with the same experiences. Great course to refresh people and especially valuable for new people entering construction.

More than just understanding the nuances of cold weather construction is the recognition that good planning skills are essential to successful projects. Attend the Lean Bootcamp: "A Hands-On Workshop to Get Lean Implemented in the Planning Process NOW" on Nov 2 to improve your planning expertise!

Alberta Construction Association News
The ACA has been working over the past year to ensure the WCB Review understood the position of
construction owners regarding this important insurance program. Over the late spring we asked our
members to have their say on the WCB review currently underway. The ACA also completed surveys,
workbook responses and a submission to respond to the panel.
ACA has been asked to appear before the panel to speak on behalf of the commercial construction
industry. We look forward to speaking with the panel and sharing our concerns in how to best serve
employees and employers within a system which is responsive for everyone.
The first report of the panel is due during the Legislature fall session and the final report is due later in
2017.
