Re-Cap of CCA 2016 Initiatives

2016 was a exciting year for CCA with several initiatives in tow.

In January of 2016 the CCA has made a $50,000 donation to SAIT Polytechnic in commemoration of SAIT's centennial. This donation was matched by the Government of Alberta as part of their Access to the Future Fund, which supports innovation and excellence within Alberta's advanced learning system. This donation resulted in two $1,750 scholarships given annually in perpetuity for students interested in building a career in construction.

In February 2016, CCA engaged with Calgary Economic Development on the new reality Calgarians face, discussing how to effectively demonstrate ones abilities and skills while looking for work.

In March 2016, CCA introduced the new Young Construction Leaders (YCL) Committee. The YCL Committee is made up of young and energetic individuals, 35 and under that have a vested interest in volunteering and contributing their expertise to the construction community. The YCL mission is to enhance the industry by providing a sustainable platform for Calgary's Young Construction Leaders to build relationships, exchange ideas and create community through social, educational and outreach initiatives. Follow @YCL_Calgary on Twitter and Instagram. You can also subscribe to the YCL newsletter or visit the YCL website.

In April 2016, CCA celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Construction Career Expo which welcomed over 2,800 students. Youth were exposed to a variety of interactive skilled trade activities while exhibitors encouraged them to build a career in construction.

With the entire evacuation of Fort McMurray, the oilsands capital of Canada was in chaos as the raging wildfires threatened a community of 83,000 people. In May 2016, CCA donated $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal for Fort McMurray Wild Fire Relief. Several CCA members and industry partners generously donated to the cause as well. In June 2016, CCA's 23rd Annual Steacy Easton Memorial Cancer Charity Classic Best Ball Tournament raised a total of $9000, $8000 of which was be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The Young Construction Leaders Committee raised $1000 which was donated to Kid's Cancer Care.

More CCA 2016 initiatives to be continued in next weeks’ newsletter.
